Protecting the display

October 2007

Note: This information is provided as a reference and does not imply that Juniper Systems will provide full support for the use of any specific third-party accessory with a Juniper Systems product.

Cases

A Field Carrying Case or Holster Case can be purchased from us to help protect the Field PC while operating in the field; specifically while being transported between data collection locations. A case can prevent damage to the display from passing brush, sticks, and other objects.

Pelican cases can be purchased from us for storing the Field PC and to protect the Field PC during vehicular transportation. Other case types are also available through resellers and third-party companies. For more information, please contact our Sales Department.

Screen Protector Sheets

Applying a screen protector sheet to the display of the Field PC can help protect the touchscreen from being scratched or possibly damaged, though can potentially cause other issues if not applied and maintained correctly. When applying a screen protector sheet, make sure it is positioned correctly and is not wedged under or against the surrounding top case or display bezel (which can lead to the touchscreen not responding or not responding accurately).

The price and quality of each screen protector sheet brand on the market varies significantly, and each must be replaced every one month to up to every one year (again depending on brand).

Screen protector sheet brands should be judged on the following:

Material

Silicon and other materials that are less sensitive to extreme temperatures or outdoor environmental conditions are recommended. Some materials (such as some plastics) may melt or shrink in heat, or may become brittle in cold temperatures; while some materials may react to other outdoor environmental conditions.

Adhesive Method

Micro-texturing (static cling), negative charge, and other methods for adhering to or covering the display are recommended. Some chemical (glue or tape type) adhesive methods can become fairly permanent on the display over time or due to certain outdoor environmental conditions (exact cause of each chemical reaction unknown), leaving a residue on the display or damaging the touchscreen when removed. A stiff material screen protector may just slide in to the space between the case and touchscreen, but as previously mentioned this may effect touchscreen behavior.

Cost

Often times it is worth the higher price for a higher quality screen protector. The cost for replacing a high priced screen protector sheet every 6-12 months remains far less than the cost for replacing the hardware touchscreen.

Recommended Screen Protectors

Below are listed the screen protector brands we recommend. Some of these brands ship with our products currently, some have shipped with our products in the past, some can be purchased from us as a separate accessory item, and some must be purchased directly from the manufacturer. Please contact our Sales Department for additional information.

Recommended brands are listed below in order from highest to lowest recommendation.

Recommended
Replacement Period
(in outdoor conditions)
PocketPCTechs WriteShield Silicon micro-texturing ("static cling") unknown (6-12 months

Warning: Failure to replace a screen protector sheet within the recommended replacement period (or screen protector manufacturer warranty period) may result in damage to the touchscreen requiring charged repair center servicing. Screen protectors may protect against scratches and minor damage, but may not protect the touchscreen layer against wear over time and direct impacts leading to inaccurate responses or complete unresponsiveness of the touchscreen.
