The Allegro 2 and Allegro 3 share the same ergonomic shape, but the devices are unmistakably different on the inside. The foremost difference is the operating system. The Allegro 3 runs on Android while the Allegro 2, released in 2014, runs Windows Mobile. Updates to the Allegro 3 include an upgraded processor, increased memory capacity, 4G LTE connectivity capability, and more.

The Allegro 3 runs the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) version of Android, making it AOSP certified not Google Mobile Services (GMS) certified. This changes how applications are loaded onto the Allegro 3.

Allegro 3 users — because there is no access to the Google Play Store — can quickly download applications using APK Pure or side-load applications manually with a USB drive.

 

Android AOSP is the foundation of all Android devices. Sponsored and spearheaded by Google, AOSP provides the source code to build an Android-compatible operating system.

The Allegro 3 runs the AOSP version of Android, in which you download applications without the Google Play Store. Juniper Systems recommends using APK Pure to download applications.

You can also download applications from a software developer's website and different app stores. In addition, you can manually side-load applications manually with a USB drive.

 

The Allegro 3 battery provides around 20 hours of run time on one charge. It takes around 5.5 hours to charge the battery; however, you can quickly swap it out with a new battery for another 20 hours of run time.

The battery is optimized to work in below-freezing temperatures, making it the ideal device for outdoor data collection.

The high-sensitivity GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou, QZSS, SBAS receiver in the Allegro 3 geo model receives GNSS data accurate within two meters. Settings provide enhanced GNSS performance under dense tree canopy.

The Allegro 3 doesn't come with preloaded software, but it's compatible with most Android applications.

The Allegro 2 is still available for a limited time. In January 2020, Juniper announced that production of Allegro 2 will end on December 31, 2020 and that final orders must be placed by October 31, 2020. Juniper will continue to service Allegro 2 devices that were previously purchased for two to three additional years beyond the end of 2020, depending on demand and part availability.

Juniper Systems chose Android for the Allegro 3 because of its familiarity among users and strong industry prospects.

Archer and Allegro products make the backbone of the Juniper Systems product line. While both are ultra-rugged and ergonomic, they're two very different devices.

IP68 and MIL-STD-810G are standards developed to test devices against simulated environmental conditions.

The IP68 certification establishes that a device is resistant to water and dust. The MIL-STD-810G certification can establish versatility against a variety of tests, including resistance to shock.

The Allegro 3 is dustproof and waterproof, tested to withstand full submersion at 1.4 meters for 30 minutes. It's also shockproof, tested to withstand multiple 4-foot drops to concrete.
